Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September 2026

Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th October 2026

Class times 10.30am to 4.30pm (with lunch break)

Your tutor is Caroline Finlay who has many years experience as a practicing enameller and jeweller as well as teaching enamelling and jewellery techniques.

This course is suitable for beginners and those with enamelling experience who are interested in exploring contemporary enamelling techniques with an emphasis on texture, pattern and mark making. Techniques covered include Stencilling, Sgraffito, Basse-taille, opaque and transparent enamels and other decorative media, dusting and wet application.

No jewellery making skills are necessary but some knowledge will mean you can attempt more intricate pieces.

All materials are included including silver for final pieces - if you wish to make a large piece or more than one piece, you may have to contribute an additional cost towards the silver. At the end of the weekend you will leave with a collection of your own enamelling samples on copper/silver as well as a unique piece of enamelled jewellery such as a pair of earrings, a pendant, a brooch or a ring.

Refreshments will be provided but not lunch which can be bought locally or you can bring your own.

Enamel will be fired in a kiln that reaches around 850 degrees centigrade and all health and safety and personal protective equipment will be provided, although you can bring your own apron. You will be expected to wear a dust mask when sieving enamels.

East Nook Studios is a welcoming, friendly and charming space with wooden beams and cast iron pillars. The building is a former Malt Barn from 1845, and is accessed from the main street via a cobbled path and is on the first floor which is accessed by stairs.

Caroline will provide more detailed information on directions, what to bring, lunch, where to stay etc. after booking.

East Nook Studio is an inviting space with a friendly atmosphere and plenty of room to stretch out. There are bars and a cafe downstairs for those who wish to make an evening of it!

Based in the West Port of St Andrews, East Nook Studio can be found in the Maltbarn at 205b South Street.
