How to care for your Jewellery

It’s amazing how a little clean up can keep your jewellery looking new

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PORCELAIN JEWELLERY

Porcelain can be cleaned easily with just soap and water, using a soft cloth or toothbrush.

We are all guilty of throwing our earrings on the table after a long day… to reshape any misshapen tassels, wipe them gently with a soft wet cloth or run under a trickling tap** to dampen and hang/lay somewhere safe to dry.

**Be careful not to wet findings such as gold-plated cups or hoops as this may wear away the plating.

Gold and silver plating on tassel cups will wear away over time.

You should always avoid using perfume or creams near any of your jewellery to preserve it.

Sterling silver fixings such as the earring pins, may tarnish if not worn for a while.

Your skin naturally polishes silver, so even rubbing with your finger or a firm cloth like denim or chamois leather should help.

Silver polishing cloths can polish silver but, in this case, will likely cause your porcelain (and tassel if you have one) to become very dirty from the polish compound within the cloth.

With porcelain, the only way to attach the silver earring back is by chemically bonding. If your earring has come under stress and the pinback detaches from the ceramic, you can easily re-bond this with a strong superglue. Feel free to get in touch for any advice.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Oils from your skin, perfume, hair products, body lotions and humidity can cause silver jewellery to tarnish.

You can protect your silver jewellery by rubbing it gently with a soft cloth, or purchasing a silver polishing cloth.

Polishing cloths are inexpensive and have a silver polishing compound within them. They help to clean off tarnish and give your jewellery back it’s shine.

When you rub with the polishing cloth, the cloth will begin to turn black. This is the compound working with your silver. Even when the cloth is black, it is still working to polish your jewellery, so do not be alarmed or throw it out too soon!
